DESCRIPTION

A 3D-Printable model of the Explorer 1 satellite, the first American satellite and 3rd satellite ever after Sputnik and Sputnik 2. Unlike the first Sputnik this satellite was equipped with several scientiifc instruments beyond just showing it's existance and temperature - including cosmic radiation and micrometeorite detectors assessing the dangers of spacesflight. The satellite was launched on the Juno I a modified version of the Jupiter C rocket in May 1958 and spent two years in orbit before reentering due to rest atmospheric drag causing orbital decay. The satellite was about 2 meters long and the model is full scaled but designed for 3d prnting so when scaled down all features are still printable.
