The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) F40PH is a four-axle, 3,000–3,200 horsepower diesel-electric locomotive built between 1975 and 1992. Initially intended for Amtrak's short-haul passenger routes, it became the backbone of Amtrak's diesel fleet after the issues with the EMD SDP40F. The F40PH was also widely adopted by commuter rail agencies across North America, including Chicago's Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), later known as Metra, which ordered 74 units between 1977 and 1983, and an additional 41 units between 1988 and 1992. Other operators included the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Caltrain, GO Transit, New Jersey Transit, and VIA Rail. In total, EMD built 449 F40PH locomotives, including variants and rebuilds.
