HISTORICAL NOTE: The CSS Manassas was an ironclad of the Confederate Navy that was rebuilt from a civil ship. Assigned in 1861, it was purchased in a personal capacity by Captain John A. Stevenson of New Orleans, the ship was converted into a military ship in the port of Algiers, in the state of Louisiana. One of the most curious features of this ship was that its hull was reconverted with a shell style, in addition, its deck was in a very low place to be an easy target for rival ships.
It was placed in the official service in September 1861, the month in which CSS Manassas was taken by the Confederation Navy and officially bought by the Confederate Government in December 1861.
On October 12, 1861, CSS Manassas made his first attack on the unionists. He attacked the unionist force that exercised the Naval blockade on the Mississippi River. The large steam boat known as USS Richmond was rammed and seriously damaged, but did not sink. The CSS Manassas also suffered slight damage in the attack, the damage came due to the very force of its onslaught, yet it was removed and was later successfully repaired.
