Historical Note: The Mariz e Barros-class ironclads were a pair of armored corvettes originally ordered by Paraguay in 1864, but were sold to Brazil when Paraguay defaulted on the payments. Configured as central-battery ironclads, they served during the 1864– 70 War of the Triple Alliance between Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay against Paraguay.
The class ships are: Mariz and Barros and Herval. They served the Brazilian Imperial Navy (after the Brazilian Navy) between years 1866 and 1897. The ships were 58 m (191 ft) long, 11 m (36 ft) beam and 2.9 m (9.5 ft) wide. Displacement: 1,197 tons. The Mariz and Barros class had a pair of steam engines, each controlling a propeller. The engines produced a total of 600 hp (450 kW) and gave the ships a maximum speed of 9 knots (17 km / h). They carried 140 tons. of coal. They were equipped with three masts. The ships had 2 150 mm (5.9 in) guns and 2 other 68 mm (2.7 in) guns. His crew consisted of 125 Men.
They participated in the battles of Curupaiti, Humaitá, Angostura serving of support the troops in earth. They repelled the Paraguayan attempt to approach the battleships Lima and Barros and Cabral on March 2, 1868.
