Sauropelta was a large nodosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, around 108 to 104 million years ago. Measuring up to 5.2 meters (17 feet) in length and weighing approximately 1.5 metric tons, it was characterized by its heavy armor and rows of bony spikes along its back and tail for defense. Sauropelta had a low-slung body with a broad, armored back, and a small head with a beak suited for cropping vegetation, indicating it was herbivorous. Fossils of Sauropelta have been found primarily in North America, providing important insights into the diversity and adaptations of armored dinosaurs.
