DESCRIPTION

In the Land of Valor, Retribution, the eldest of three brothers and the son of the first man, High Lord Lucien-his tragic story is told in hushed tones and used to frighten even the most unruly of children. His father, the great immortal patriarch of mankind and one of the First Born ruled his realm fairly and benevolently. However, as the other races grew in power, the High Lord grew in his paranoia. He commanded his subjects to build an impenetrable keep, a fortress of no equal. No sooner had the last stone been set than did an assassin befall the royal family. Lucien awoke to find his three sons murdered in their sleep. His paranoia plunged him into madness, and he struck a deal with those that dwell in dark places and mettle with foul sciences. As a result of his bargain, Lucien's sons were returned to him, but not as they had been: they were remade into armored, heartless beings, enforcers of their father's now twisted will.

The dwarves were first to fall prey to the High Lord's conquest, for they held a secret that had been hidden since the creation of Vaelor. Relics of power, a byproduct of the creation event itself-they held unfathomable capabilities, and the now tyrannical kingdom of men could never hope to rule unchallenged without their capture. The outer dwarven settlements burned, and the Knights of Anathema-Penance, Retribution, and Absolution-once noble, were now heralds of death and despair. They butchered all, the men, women, children, and their beasts of burden-a nefarious plot to draw out the three dwarven kings to protect their people-and it worked.

Goldred and Halthor, two of the dwarven kings and First Born, took a great host and rode out to quell the Knights of Anathema, but they were undone. High Lord Lucien's sons were cunning and powerful; their armor was forged of a long- forgotten dark craft, and they possessed a strength unrivaled by any mortal being. Together, with their bannermen, they overtook the dwarves and captured Goldred and Halthor. There is little known about how they were tortured in Lucien's dungeons for those long months, but the tormentors extracted what they saught, and an unspeakable act was committed: Lucien struck down the dwarven kings.

Never before had the blood of a First Born been spilled, and the land of Vaelor itself seemed to shake with rage.

In an act never before seen and unseen since, the races of Vaelor united to undo the tyranny of Lucien. Lucien, however, abandoned his people, taking his Knights of Anathema and seeking out what he had discovered from the dwarven kings: the location of a secret dwarven vault.
