Purussaurus was a giant caiman that lived during the Miocene epoch, approximately 8 to 6 million years ago. Measuring up to 13 meters (43 feet) in length and weighing up to 8.4 metric tons, it was one of the largest crocodilian species ever known. Purussaurus had a robust skull and powerful jaws filled with conical teeth, adapted for catching large prey, including fish, turtles, and mammals. Its fossils have been primarily found in South America, particularly in the Amazon Basin, providing valuable insights into the diversity and size of prehistoric crocodilians.
