Documentation (history)

Cement is a binder formed from a mixture of calcined and then ground limestone and clay, which has the property of hardening after contact with water. The product resulting from the grinding of these rocks is called clinker and becomes cement when a small amount of gypsum is added to prevent shrinkage of the mixture when water is added to harden it. Mixed with stone aggregates (gravel and sand) and water, it creates a uniform, malleable and plastic mixture that sets and hardens to a stone-like consistency, called concrete. It is widely used in construction and civil engineering.
