Citipati is a protector deity in Tibetan Buddhism. The Citipatis were a pair of ascetics meditating near a cemetery. In their deep state of meditation, they did not notice the thief who crept up on them. The thief beheaded them and threw them into the mud, which forced them to move on to the next stage of ascetic practices. Enraged by this act, the Citipati swore revenge on the thief and became a sworn enemy of thieves and other criminals.Citipati cannot leave cemeteries and can only catch thieves passing through them. While waiting for criminals, the chitipati spend their time dancing and blowing horns, a ritual that Tibetan monks repeat twice a year. Their dance also serves as a symbol of death and rebirth, since the chitipati are made up of both halves of the human body, male and female. Their skeletal form is a reminder of the impermanence of life and eternal change.
