Description

One of the oldest European-inhabited cities in the United States, the city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Standing at the crossroads of inland trade, the city became one of the most important cities in America's early history. Reaching the height of its power around the turn of the 20th century, St. Louis once proudly boasted a status of 4th largest city in the country. Architecturally, St. Louis was not to be left out of the building boom that defined the 1920s and 30s. This pack includes 4 of the most major skyscrapers built in St. Louis in this era.

Park Plaza Hotel -The Chase Park Plaza Hotel, otherwise known simply as the Park Plaza, is a 315ft (96m) tall building in St. Louis, Missouri. Located on the city's Central West End, the lavishly decorated art deco skyscraper overlooks sprawling Forest Park as well as some of St. Louis's most elite neighborhoods. The tower, designed by architecture firm Schopp and Baumann, was completed in 1929 as an addition to the luxurious hotel complex that shares the same name. Its imposing form, elegant setbacks, and unchallenged height far from the city's historic downtown make the Park Plaza one of the city's greatest pieces of architectural heritage.

Continental Life Building -Located in the city's Midtown neighborhood, this building rises 286ft (87m). This sophisticated art deco tower was designed by architect William B. Ittner and completed in 1930. Around the turn of the 21st century, the building was converted to residential use.

Southwestern Bell Building -This mammoth building is the tallest and largest building built in pre-war St. Louis. Its bulk soars to a height of 397ft (121m) over downtown St. Louis. Designed by Mauran, Russell, & Crowell, the building uses an imposing gothic-inspired art deco style. A relatively early addition to the city's jazz age skyline, the building was completed in 1926.

Civil Courts Building -A monument to state power, this building was built in 1930 to house the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. A neoclassical design through-and-through, the building's design is said to have been inspired by the ancient wonder, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Atop the building's stepped pyramid roof is a massive statue of two sphinxes. The building stands 386 (118m) tall.

NOTE - The Park Plaza Hotel is available for sale separately.
