Cozcacuauhtli (vulture)
The zopilote, or vulture, played a significant role in the Aztec ecosystem. These scavengers helped keep the environment clean by consuming carrion. They were also seen as messengers of the gods, particularly associated with death and transformation.
Aztecs respected vultures for their ecological role and symbolic meaning. Their keen eyesight and ability to soar for long periods made them admired creatures.
