Heavy Metal:After popular subculture and art, the next most popular reference of the skull is associated with heavy metal music. Heavy Metal as a genre has always placed a special emphasis on visual imagery and mascots hold a special place in the hearts of fans. Some of the most popular mascots have been inspired from the skull. Be it Chaly, the winged skull that was a prominent feature on most of Overkill’s covers, Vic Rattlehead from Megadeath or Eddie from Iron Maiden. Eventually, the use of the Skull spilled over into other genres like Punk Rock and Goth.

The onus of introducing the skull into Haute Couture undoubtedly goes to Alexander McQueen, the British Fashion Designer who with his rebellious sense of style made the skull even more popular than it was. The skull has featured prominently in many of his creations. We can look to the symbolism of water, and know it carries meanings of cleansing, purification and fluidity of motion (emotions are also a water symbol). Then, if skulls symbolize the seat of the soul and power, perhaps hurling them into the dark depths of sacred well water indicates an intent to cleanse the soul or offer divine clarity and renewal for the soul.

Sacred wells aren’t the only place ritualistic skull symbols and heads pop up in Celtic realms. We see carvings of heads used to decorate doorways and hallways of ancient ceremonial grounds and sanctuaries. A warning sign perhaps?
