History

In the late 1930s, Germany began constructing two ships based on the Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruisers, aiming for design similarity with the third ship, Prinz Eugen. These vessels were initially intended to be light cruisers despite their heavy cruiser-like displacement and armor, mainly due to their 150mm main batteries, consistent with those used in the Königsberg- and Leipzig-class light cruisers. However, in 1937, the German government intervened, reclassifying the planned ships as heavy cruisers. Nonetheless, construction of these heavy cruisers was never finalized.
