Wario was a childhood rival of Mario and Luigi, who became jealous of their successes. His first appearance was in 1992, in the video game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, as the main antagonist and final boss of that game. Wario's name comes from Mario's name, but joined to the Japanese adjective warui (bad), so Wario's name would mean Bad Mario.
