They are humanoid fungi, often depicted as sentient, with a society and culture resembling that of mushrooms. The name myconid is a combination of myco, referring to fungi, and nids, which is a common suffix for creatures or entities in fantasy settings.

In D&D and other fantasy worlds, myconids are typically peaceful and reclusive, dwelling in subterranean environments like caves or the Underdark. They are known for their telepathic abilities, which they use for communication within their communities. Myconid society is often organized around a central figure, such as a sovereign or ruler, and they are often portrayed as guardians of the fungi-rich areas they inhabit.
