Description

Ushabti of Tutankhamun
This gilded ushabti represents the youthful king Tutankhamun, adorned with the Blue Khepresh Crown, typically worn during ceremonial events and processions, along with the uraeus. It features a wide collar crafted from gold leaf and includes the two symbols associated with Osiris.

Ushabtis, also referred to as shabtis or shawabtis, are diminutive figurines that were frequently discovered in ancient Egyptian burial sites. These figures were designed to serve as attendants for the deceased in the afterlife, undertaking tasks that the deceased would have been responsible for during their lifetime. The term ushabti is derived from the ancient Egyptian word wsḥb, which translates to answerer.

The ushabtis, or funerary figures, were created to carry out labor on behalf of the deceased in the afterlife. Typically constructed from materials such as faience, wood, or pottery, these figures varied in size. They were categorized based on their roles and aligned with the Egyptian calendar, comprising 365 laborers—one for each day of the year—and 36 overseers, each representing a chief of a ten-day week or ten workers. Generally, they are depicted as mummiform figures holding agricultural implements, symbolizing their function as laborers in the fields of the afterlife.

In Tutankhamun's tomb, an additional 12 foremen were included, one for each month, bringing the total to 413. The Griffith Institute houses the Howard Carter archives, which contain a comprehensive analysis of the entire collection, conducted by Howard Carter and documented through photographs by Harry Burton.
