Thoth, derived from Koinē Greek Θώθ (Thṓth) and borrowed from Coptic Ⲑⲱⲟⲩⲧ (Thōout), is an ancient Egyptian god whose name in Egyptian is Ḏḥwtj, meaning [he] is like the ibis. He is frequently represented in art as a man with the head of either an ibis or a baboon, both of which are sacred to him. His female counterpart is Seshat, and he is married to Ma'at. Thoth is revered as the deity of the Moon, wisdom, knowledge, writing, hieroglyphs, science, magic, art, and judgment.

The principal temple dedicated to Thoth was situated in Hermopolis, known in Ancient Egyptian as ḫmnw (Khemenu) and in Coptic as Ϣⲙⲟⲩⲛ (Shmun). This temple, later referred to as el-Ashmunein in Egyptian Arabic, suffered significant destruction prior to the advent of Christianity. Although its large pronaos remained intact as of 1826, it was ultimately demolished in the mid-19th century to provide materials for a sugar factory's foundation.

In Egyptian mythology, Thoth held numerous essential roles, including the maintenance of the universe and serving as one of the two deities, alongside Ma'at, who flanked Ra's solar barque. Over time, Thoth became closely linked with the resolution of divine disputes, the practice of magic, the development of writing, and the judgment of souls in the afterlife.

The Egyptian pronunciation of ḏḥwty is not entirely certain, but it may be reconstructed as *ḏiḥautī, potentially pronounced as *[t͡ʃʼi.ˈħau.tʰiː] or *[ci.ˈħau.tʰiː]. This reconstruction is informed by the Ancient Greek adaptation Thōth ([tʰɔːtʰ]) or Theut, as well as various transliterations into Sahidic Coptic, including ⲑⲟⲟⲩⲧ (Thoout), ⲑⲱⲑ (Thōth), ⲑⲟⲟⲧ (Thoot), ⲑⲁⲩⲧ (Thaut), Taautos (Τα
