This artwork, created between 1512 and 1514, is housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Additionally, Titian produced another painting on the same theme, titled Tobias and the Angel, which dates from approximately 1540 to 1545 and is located in the church of the Madonna dell'Orto in Venice.

This early work, influenced by Giorgione, is documented in a print by Lefèbre. Originally from the church of Santa Caterina in Venice, some scholars once believed it to be a replica of a now-lost original.

The painting's history can be traced back to Boschini, who noted its presence in 1664 on an altar dedicated to the Archangel Raphael within the church. The inclusion of the Bembo coat of arms indicates that it may have been commissioned by a member of the family of the renowned Renaissance humanist Pietro Bembo.

Regarding the later work, Vasari mentions that Titian completed it in 1507 during the time of Emperor Maximilian's war, a claim that Giovanni Morelli also supported by considering it an early piece. However, stylistic analysis suggests otherwise, leading Crowe and Cavalcaselle to attribute it to the same period as the Presentation of the Virgin. Gronau and Ricketts propose that it was created shortly thereafter, in the early 1540s.

In the composition of Tobias and the Archangel, both figures occupy the right side of the canvas, moving forward with purpose. Their focus is drawn to the vase held by Raphael, with Tobias gazing intently at it. The Archangel's left leg is exposed, and his right arm extends outward, while his unseen left arm appears to encircle Tobias protectively. A small dog accompanies them.
