Popeye, a feisty, joke-loving cartoon sailor, gains superhuman strength after eating a can of always-handy spinach. Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar, who introduced the character into his then-current newspaper comic strip Thimble Theater in 1929. Popeye is a small, rude sailor with large forearms, a squinted eyes, and a grim face, with a pipe always in his mouth. He is always ready for a fight instead of a rational discussion, has a hoarse voice, and constantly mutters under his breath. His motto is I like what I like, and that's all I like.
