Masjid Al Aqsa dome of rock relief Painting 3d printable model cnc

The Qubbat as-Sakhrah, also known as the Mosque of Omar, is the oldest surviving Islamic monument in Jerusalem. It holds great significance for both Muslims and Jews, as the rock upon which it stands is considered sacred by both religions. According to Islamic tradition, it is believed that the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven from this site. In Jewish tradition, it is believed that Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac here. The Dome of the Rock, along with the Al-Aqsa Mosque, is situated on the Temple Mount, which was the location of Solomon's Temple and its subsequent structures.

Constructed between AD 685 and 691 by Caliph 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, the Dome of the Rock was not intended as a mosque for regular worship, but rather as a shrine for pilgrims. It holds great aesthetic and architectural importance, being one of the first monumental buildings in Islamic history. The dome itself is octagonal in shape and resembles more Roman or Byzantine architecture than Islamic. It is adorned with intricate mosaic, faience, and marble, much of which was added in the centuries following its completion. The dome, approximately 60 feet in diameter, sits atop an elevated drum and is supported by a circle of 16 piers and columns. Surrounding this circle is an octagonal arcade consisting of 24 piers and columns. The outer walls also follow the octagonal shape, with each side measuring approximately 60 feet wide and 36 feet high. Both the dome and the exterior walls feature numerous windows.

During the European Middle Ages, Christians and Muslims believed that the Dome of the Rock was the Temple of Solomon, known as Templum Domini. The Knights Templars, who were involved in the Crusades, were quartered there, and Templar churches in Europe replicated its architectural design.
