The George Washington monument in Buenos Aires was a gift from United States residents in Argentina to celebrate the Centennial of the May Revolution. Charles Keck, a prominent New York sculptor, was commissioned to make a bronze sculpture and depicted the hero as a politician, standing next to his chair and speaking to the people. The work was inaugurated on July 4, 1913, in Palermo . Years later, in 1927, the plinth, the three access steps to the platform itself and the side benches were destroyed by the explosion of a bomb.
