Khafre, also referred to as Khephren or Chephren, was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty during the Old Kingdom. He was the son of Khufu and the successor of Djedefre. According to the ancient historian Manetho, Khafre was followed by king Bikheris, but archaeological evidence suggests that he was instead succeeded by king Menkaure. Khafre is renowned for constructing the second largest pyramid at Giza. It is widely accepted in modern Egyptology that the Great Sphinx of Giza was built around 2500 BC during Khafre's reign. Unfortunately, little is known about Khafre aside from the accounts provided by Herodotus, who wrote about him 2,000 years after his lifetime.
