The name Baphomet dates back to the Inquisition and the Knights Templar, who in the 12th century were even tortured for allegedly confessing to worshiping a pagan idol called Baphomet. Some historians believe that Baphomet was simply a derivation of the name Muhammad, the founding prophet of Islam. But over the years the mystery and speculation surrounding the Templars has increased, as have interpretations of the word and its meaning.
