Description

Alabaster Perfume Vase of Tutankhamun 3d printable model

The alabaster perfume vase belonging to King Tutankhamun is constructed from four pieces of alabaster that have been joined together. Its symbolism suggests that the Nile will bestow its offerings upon the king and queen, whose names are inscribed on the vase. The vulture adorned with the Atef crown symbolizes either the goddess Mut or Nekhbet, serving as a protector of the perfume.

On either side of the vase stand two deities, both named Hapi, characterized by their drooping breasts and rounded bellies, embodying the fertility of the Nile. They are distinguished by the clusters of lily and papyrus on their heads, representing Hapi of Upper Egypt and Hapi of Lower Egypt, which signifies the sema tawy symbol, denoting the unification of the kingdom.

The divisions of the land and its Nile are further illustrated by the lily and papyrus stems that are tied around the neck of the vase, held by the two Hapis. Each deity also supports a column that represents a single stem and flower of the respective plants, topped with a cobra that wears the crown of both Upper and Lower Egypt.

The openwork panels of the stand beneath the vase feature falcon figures with solar disks, positioned above the hieroglyphic nbu sign for “gold.” These falcons, with their wings outstretched, protect the cartouches inscribed with the king’s names, which are flanked by scepters symbolizing “dominion.” The vase is adorned with gold and painted ivory.

The tomb of Tutankhamun, unearthed in 1922 by Howard Carter, revealed a wealth of treasures, including numerous perfumed oil vases. These vases, often crafted from alabaster or other precious materials, were intricately designed to hold perfumed oils used for various purposes, including religious ceremonies, personal embellishment, and aromatherapy.

Perfumes were of great importance in ancient Egypt and were extensively utilized by both the living and the deceased.
