Abu Simbel is a significant archaeological site featuring two monumental rock-hewn temples located in the village of Abu Simbel, within the Aswan Governorate of Upper Egypt, close to the Sudanese border. Positioned on the western shore of Lake Nasser, it lies approximately 230 kilometers (140 miles) southwest of Aswan, or about 300 kilometers (190 miles) by road. These twin temples were originally sculpted from the mountainside during the 13th century BC, under the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II, belonging to the 19th Dynasty. The colossal rock reliefs of Ramesses II on the temple facades have become emblematic, with smaller figures of his wife, Nefertari, and their children depicted at his feet. Inside the Great Temple, sculptures commemorate Ramesses II's valiant leadership during the Battle of Kadesh.

In 1968, the entire complex was relocated to higher ground to prevent submersion by Lake Nasser, the reservoir created by the Aswan Dam. This effort was part of the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, which involved constructing an artificial hill to accommodate the temples, overseen by Polish archaeologist Kazimierz Michałowski from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw. You can use the **Abu-simbel 3D model **as you likeThe Abu Simbel complex, along with other relocated temples from Nubian sites such as Philae, Amada, and Wadi es-Sebua, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments.

History
Construction
During his reign, Ramesses II initiated an extensive construction program across Egypt and Nubia, which was under Egyptian control. Nubia held great significance for the Egyptians as a source of gold and various other valuable trade commodities. Consequently, he erected several grand temples in the region to assert Egypt's power and to promote Egyptian culture among the Nubian populace. The most notable of these are the rock-cut temples situated near the contemporary village of Abu Simbel, at the Second Nile Cataract, marking the boundary between Lower and Upper Nubia. The complex consists of two temples: the Great Temple, dedicated to Ramesses II, and the Small Temple, dedicated to his principal wife, Queen Nefertari.
