Horse Horses (lat.Equus) are the only modern genus of the equidae family of the equid order.
Cladistic analysis based on cranial and postcranial elements (30 taxa, 129 characters) supports the monophilia of the genus Equus and denies recognition of the genera Plesippus and Allohippus, supports the origin of the desert zebra (Equus grevyi) and members of the zebra / donkey clade from European horses of Stenon. Recent results of genome studies confirm the monophilia of the genus Equus and indicate its emergence about 4.0-4.5 million years ago [1].
