Historical Note: In April 1880 the then Minister of the Brazilian Navy, Admiral Jose Rodrigues de Lima Duarte, presented a report on the urgency of modernizing the Imperial Navy. The Admiral's intention was to acquire two battleships from British shipyards, and thus the battleships Riachuelo and Aquidabã were commissioned. Classified as a Squadron Battleship, it was built in the United Kingdom by the Samuda & Brothers shipyard, and launched overboard on August 14, 1885.
In November 1891, Aquidaban played a decisive role in consolidating the coup d'état against the Monarchy by establishing the Republic. It participated in the Armada Revolt in 1893 against the republican government. Commanded by Admiral Custodio de Melo, the ship crossed Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro three times, resisting coast artillery, and was carrying on board the officer who had called him Cardboard Battleship. From then on, his nickname would become Ironcoat. In April 1894 it was torpedoed to the north of the partially sinking island of Santa Catarina, was recovered and sent for modernization in Germany. Only in 1897 did it sail again.
On January 21, 1906, when anchored in the bay of Jacuecanga, Angra dos Reis, when it was a few minutes to 11 pm, for reasons unknown until now, the Aquidabã suffered a violent explosion in a cordite containing warehouse, cracking in half and coming to sink. 212 men of his crew perished in the disaster, including part of the ministerial entourage conducting studies on the new military port.
Same fate as another battleship similar to him, Maine that exploded at the port of havana in January 1898. The curious fact is that the United States government commissioned its construction to rival Aquidaban and Riachuelo.
