The British Railways Standard Class 5MT was a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives of which 172 were built between 1951 and 1957. British Rail introduced the Standard set of classes to try and remove the multiple and disparate locomotive designs that were difficult and expensive to maintain. The 5MT was one of the most common and widely used of the Standard classes.
