Janggu is one of the Korean percussion instruments. It is made by covering both sides of a narrow-waisted barrel made of paulownia wood with leather. It is also called Janggo, and it is also called Seyogo because of its thin waist. The left side (north side, wide side) uses thick cowhide to produce low notes, and the right side (chaebyeon, narrow side) uses thin horsehide to produce high notes. Bukpyeon is beaten by hand, and chaebyeon is beaten with bamboo poles. Janggu is an indispensable instrument in traditional Korean music and nongak. Sometimes it is accompanied by other instruments, and sometimes it is played alone to match the song.
