The function of a gear is to transmit force or torque through the rotation of a shaft. Therefore, through the joining of a pair of gears or the combination of several of them, or even combined with transmission chains, they are used to transmit rotations and forces from a driving shaft to a driven shaft. The pinion is the smallest gear, so it makes more rotations than the crown. The crown is already the largest, therefore, it rotates less, but does more work on the pinion.
