The X-20 Dyna-Soar was an experimental spaceplane developed in the late 1950s to early 1960s by Boeing under a contract to the US Air Force. It was intended to demonstrate new materials and aerodynamic control for reentry vehicles, and support crewed short-duration missions to orbit. Initial missions were planned to last only a few hours with a single pilot, but follow-on upgrades to the X-20 could have allowed days of independent flight, or weeks docked to a space station, as well as the ability to carry several passengers. Titan III rockets were the main launch vehicle planned to carry the X-20, and the Transtage upper stage was developed to serve as an expendable service and propulsion module
