First solar powered and oldest orbiting satellite
Vanguard I was the first successful satellite placed into orbit by the Vanguard rocket on Sept 18, 1959. Operated by the Navy, it was the first solar powered satellite and the oldest satellite to date to remain in orbit. Vanguard I was the second satellite placed into orbit by the United States.
