Description

Detailed model of NASA's Space Shuttle.

Geometry and Rigging

This is a high-poly model (261,762 vertices, 256,464 faces) featuring the orbiter, fuel tank and solid rocket boosters. The orbiter is fully rigged with an armature to animate the landing gear, payload bay doors, elevons, airbrakes and remote manipulator arm. The native Blender versions also include additional controls to simplify raising and lowering the landing gear (including opening and closing the doors), the shock absorbers for the wheels, the payload bay doors, airbrakes and elevons.

Note: The constraints and IK rigging of the armature are only available in the native Blender versions. The armature is not available in the .obj version.

Materials and Textures

The model is fully UV unwrapped with non-overlapping UVs and comes with three PBR materials - one for the fuel tank and solid rocket boosters, one for the exterior elements of the orbiter and one for the interior of the payload bay, remote manipulator arm and undercarriage. Each material comes with five 4k texture maps - base colour, ambient occlusion, metallic, roughness and normal. Alternate colour maps are also provided for the orbiter exterior material for all five of the shuttle variants.

Good model for wide and medium shots. Not really enough details for close-up renders (perhaps also not to be expected at this price point). Since I use Cinema 4D with Redshift, I imported the FBX which worked fine and converting the materials for Redshift was no problem. As the product description states, the control system/rigging for the control surfaces and landing gear only works for Blender out of the box, but the FBX retains the bones/joints so you can manually animate them using PSR (primarily rotation). However, using a bones/joint based rigging system also means that the orbiter only has two (skinned) meshes (an exterior and an interior one, with the tank and two booster rockets also being separate meshes for a total of 5 individual meshes/objects). I have not needed to contact the creator for support, so I cannot speak to that. Recommended for long and medium distance renders without the need for detailed close-ups of the exterior or interior (cargo bay).
