Gateway is a lunar orbital space station in development by NASA, with international (Europe, Japan, Canada) and commercial (Northrop Grumman, Maxar) partnerships as part of the Artemis program. Gateway will be located in a near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO), and support crews initially for durations of up to 60 days in orbit, as well as serve as a logistics hub supporting crewed lunar surface missions, via the two Human Lander Systems being developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin
Currently four modules have been contracted: The Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) by Maxar, derived from the SSL-1300 communications satellite platformHabitat and Logistics Outpost (HALO) by Northrop Grumman, derived from their Cygnus logistics vehicleEuropean System Providing Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecommunications (ESPRIT) by ESAInternational Hab (I-HAB) jointly developed by ESA, JAXA, and NASA
An airlock and potentially additional habitation or logistics modules are also planned, but contracts/partnerships for these modules have not yet been announced
The PPE and HALO modules will be launched as a single Comanifested Vehicle (CMV) aboard a Falcon Heavy. Subsequent modules will launch as comanifested payloads on Space Launch System/Orion missions
