Gateway is a lunar orbital space station in development by NASA, with international (Europe, Japan, Canada) and commercial (Northrop Grumman, Maxar) partnerships as part of the Artemis program. Gateway will be located in a near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO), and support crews initially for durations of up to 60 days in orbit, as well as serve as a logistics hub supporting crewed lunar surface missions, via the two Human Lander Systems being developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin
Currently four modules have been contracted: The Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) by Maxar, derived from the SSL-1300 communications satellite platform Habitat and Logistics Outpost (HALO) by Northrop Grumman, derived from their Cygnus logistics vehicle European System Providing Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecommunications (ESPRIT) by ESA International Hab (I-HAB) jointly developed by ESA, JAXA, and NASA
An airlock and potentially additional habitation or logistics modules are also planned, but contracts/partnerships for these modules have not yet been announced
The PPE and HALO modules will be launched as a single Comanifested Vehicle (CMV) aboard a Falcon Heavy. Subsequent modules will launch as comanifested payloads on Space Launch System/Orion missions
