Moon open pit mining quarry

Moon open pit mining quarry 3D model

Description

In the near future there is a very good chance we might start to colonize the moon. However, lifting everything out of earth’s gravity is extremely costly and fuel consuming. Sooner or later, we will have to start producing building materials on the moon itself.

Luckily, the moon has plenty of material for us to mine and use. Moon regolith is a good material for building a moon base. It can be pressed to bricks or 3d printed directly into structures. For more specialized application, the different materials like aluminum and silica can be separated out and purified.

Of course, mining material on the moon is not only useful for a moon base itself, the moon contains a resource that is practically unavailable on earth. An isotope of Helium called Helium 3. This element has multiple uses but its most potent use is that it can be used for a type of nuclear fusion that creates far less radiation then any other form of nuclear power generation.
