The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion molecular cloud complex. With an apparent magnitude of 6.8 and an apparent size of 8 x 6 arcminutes, the nebula is visible in binoculars and easily observed in small telescopes in good conditions. Its striking appearance has earned it the nickname the Chess Knight Nebula.
