Methadone (formula: C21H27NO; CAS: 76-99-3; systematic name: (RS)-6-(dimethylamino)-4,4-diphenylheptan-3-one) is a synthetic opioid used in opioid maintenance therapy and for pain relief. Pain relieving effects are similar to morphine. Side effects are similar to those of other opioids and include dizziness, sleepiness, vomiting, and sweating; serious risks include opioid abuse.
