Fentanyl (formula: C22H28N2O; CAS: 437-38-7; systematic name: N-phenyl-N-[1-(2-phenylethyl)piperidin-4-yl]propanamide) is an opioid used as a pain medication and during anesthesia. Common side effects include vomiting and constipation; serious side effects include low blood pressure, addiction, or coma. Fentanyl works primarily by activating µ-opioid receptors and is around 100 times stronger than morphine. It is the most widely used synthetic opioid in medicine.
