A defibrillator is a device that delivers a shock of electricity to the heart to help restart it when someone is in cardiac arrest. Defibrillators can also treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation and non-perfusing ventricular tachycardia. There are several types of defibrillators, including:Automated external defibrillators (AEDs): Portable devices that can automatically diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias. AEDs are designed to be used in combination with CPR to save lives in the first few minutes after a cardiac arrest. AEDs are available in many communities, schools, and workplaces. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs): Devices that are surgically implanted in the body to monitor the heart and deliver electrical impulses to correct arrhythmias. There are two types of ICDs: traditional ICDs, which are placed in the chest, and subcutaneous ICDs (S-ICDs), which are placed under the skin at the side of the chest. Wearable cardioverter defibrillators (WCDs): Devices that rest on the body. Defibrillation is most effective when performed as soon as possible after an arrhythmia begins.
