Barbiturates are central nervous system depressants. Their medicinal use has been phased out but they are still used as anticonvulsants and in the treatent of epilepsy and acute migraines. Some are also used as recreational drugs. Barbuturates are sparingly soluble in water and often provided as a more soluble sodium salt. Four of the compounds are also provided as (a resonance structure of) their sodium salt.
