Magnetic planetary gearbox

Magnetic planetary gearbox 3D print model

Description

General info:A planetary reducer relying on magnets instead of gears in order to transmit torque. 64 neodymium magnets in total - 30 on the outer ring, 8 n each planet and 10 on the sun gear are arranged into rings with alternating polarity, which causes them to 'mesh' and forces rolling instead of sliding motion. A reducer like this could be used in applications where it is required to apply torque, but the system needs to be able to skip teeth by design. It is also a great fidgeting toy. The sun to carrier reduction is 1:4

Printing:there are 14 parts to print, but it all it takes only about 6h on my Prusa mk3s. I'd recommend 0.15mm layer height with a 0.4mm nozzle. If your printer is not well callibrated you might need to reprint some of the threads withg a negative XY offset.

Assembly:Assembly might take some time, because the magnets are pretty hard to work with. The best way to put the magnets in place is to screw the two parts of a given gear together 1/3~1/2 of the way, and than start pushing the magnets in. Remember to put them in with an ALTERNATING POLARITY! So if you have a stack of those magnets in your hand you rotate every second one before inserting it! Only that way you will achive the magnetic meshing effect.
