The characterisation of different peoples by their hairstyle and clothing is constant in Assyrian art and allows them to be identified. The five figures represented here are Medes, recognisable by their large laced boots and their costume made of spotted skin or covered with a woolly fleece. They can be distinguished from the Assyrians by their curly hair cut short and girded with a thin band; most of them have short beards. Two men hold in their hands a model of a fortified city, a sign of allegiance to Sargon. The gesture of a raised right fist is a sign of greeting and respect.
