General Ologbosere
In 1897, the British military campaign resulted in the exile of King Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and the surrender or capture of many kingdom chiefs. However, one war chief, Ologbosere, chose armed resistance. Ologbosere had been condemned to death by the British for killing a previous expedition to Benin, which triggered the 1897 punitive response. He hid among supportive villages, leading a two-year guerrilla war against the British in Benin, launching attacks, and destroying their outposts and flags.
Death
Ologbosere was captured. The British forces burned villages, destroyed crops, detained young people and incarcerated rulers. Eventually, war-weary villagers betrayed Ologbosere and his cohorts.
He was held responsible by the British for the killing of a British delegation to Benin City in 1897 and hanged in June 1899.
