Description

Oba Esigie bronze Bust

Oba Esigie was a ruler of the ancient Benin Kingdom in what is now Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, reigning from around 1504 to 1547. He succeeded his father Oba Ozolua and, with support from his mother Queen Idia, overcame a power struggle with his brother Arhuaran. Esigie abolished the practice of killing the king’s mother, gave Idia the title of Iyoba (Queen Mother), and established cultural traditions. He is known for commissioning artworks now held in museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.
