Hand carved, and likely from the local basalt or marbleized limestone. The Miwok Native Americans of Central and Northern California used creek bed and portable stone mortars for thousands of years to grind acorns and other seeds or nuts for food. Some Miwok grinding rocks have been dated to over 2,000 to 3,000 years old.
