Nearly 300 small monolithic altars like this one have been discovered in Palmyra. Most of them are pyrées, small altars where offerings were burned, here incense grains. We can identify this type of altars by their pyramidal upper part at the top of which is cut a cup. They are believed to be used to commemorate a celebration of worship or a major event in the life of the dedicator. They were to fill in large numbers the Palmyrenian temples. The altar bears a dedication to a deity written in Palmyrenian which is difficult to decipher here. He also wears a relief which represents two standing men wearing a belted tunic and a coat. The one on the left puts his hands against his temples while the one on the right raises his two arms on either side of his head in a gesture of imploration.
