Swietenia Mahagoni: West Indian Mahogany Swietenia Mahagoni is a species of Swietenia native to South Florida in the United States and islands in the Caribbean including the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. It is a medium-sized semi-evergreen tree growing to 98–115 ft tall. Swietenia Mahagoni is the species from which the original mahogany wood was produced, and is grown as a plantation tree. Mahogany's first major use in Spain and England was for ship building, and during the 18th century it was the chief wood employed in Europe for that purpose. It has also been used extensively to make furniture and musical instruments.
