Castanopsis Sieboldii: Itajii Chinkapin Castanopsis Sieboldii, also known as the Itajii chinkapin or Itajii, is a species of evergreen tree that lives in subtropical eastern Asia. It typically grows to at least 60 ft wide, forming a wide canopy with leathery leaves. The wood is hard and strong, and highly resistant to salt damage- as such, Chinkapins can often be found in coastal areas. Their nuts are edible, and often used as snacks for children in Japan. The wood is often used as building material and charcoal, and can be used for shiitake mushroom cultivation. The bark is also used to produce a black dye. One peculiar fact about the Itajii Chinkapin is that honey produced near to the trees has an unpleasant smell.
