Description
Name: Sea Almond
Scientific: Terminalia catappa
A.K.A.: Indian Almond, Malabar Almond, Tropical Almond, False Kamani, Country Almond, Beach Almond
This Variation: 1 of 4. This is a High Poly model. A Low Poly version is also available.
Notes: A large tropical tree in the leadwood tree family, native to Asia, Australia, the Pacific, Madagascar and Seychelles. The tree has been spread widely by humans, so the native range is uncertain. It has long been naturalised in a broad belt extending from Africa to northern Australia and New Guinea through southeast Asia and Micronesia into the Indian subcontinent. Unusual for a tropical plant, this tree is deciduous, with it growth cycle tied to wet-dry season rather than spring-autumn. Before falling, the leaves turn pinkish-reddish or yellow-brown, due to pigments such as violaxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin. The tree is never entirely barren with some leaves being retained even at the height of the dry season. The fruit is edible, but difficult to extract.
