Prunus Persica: Peach Prunus Persica is a is a deciduous tree native to the region of Northwest China between the Tarim Basin and the north slopes of the Kunlun Mountains, where it was first domesticated and cultivated. It bears edible juicy fruits with various characteristics, most called peaches and the glossy-skinned varieties called nectarines. The specific name persica refers to its widespread cultivation in Persia (modern-day Iran), from where it was transplanted to Europe. The trees grows up to 25 ft in height, but normally are within the range of 10-15 ft when pruned properly. Cultivated peaches are divided into clingstones and freestones, depending on whether the flesh sticks to the pit or not. Fossil endocarps with characteristics indistinguishable from those of modern peaches have been recovered from late Pliocene deposits in Kunming, dating to 2.6 million years ago. Recent evidence suggests that domestication of the peach occurred as early as 600) BC in the Zhejiang Province of China, and the oldest archaeological peach pits are from the Kuahuqiao site.
